FOUR SINS OF EDOM.

WORD&POWER for TODAY

 FOUR SINS OF EDOM

“Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he did pursue his brother with the sword, and did cast off all pity, and his anger did tear perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.” Amos 1:11 KJV

Edom was founded by Esau, the brother of Jacob. When an issue erupted between Edom and Israel (the nation founded by Jacob), God watched to see how the matter was handled by both sides, and this was His observation: “Thus says the Lord, “For three transgressions of Edom [the descendants of Esau] and for four (multiplied delinquencies) I will not reverse its punishment or revoke My word concerning it, Because he pursued his brother Jacob (Israel) with the sword, Corrupting and stifling his compassions and casting off all mercy; His destructive anger raged continually, And he maintained [and nurtured] his wrath forever.” Amos 1:11 AMP.

(1) HE PURSUED HIS BROTHER WITH THE SWORD: We later got to understand that apart from the literal metal, words can also operate like swords in killing one’s fellows. And Jesus explained this in Matthew 5:21-22. Brothers who slay their brothers with malicious words, both in their presence and at their backs. People call it “character assassination”, but God calls it actual murder of a person. Because, anyone you slay with your tongue in the presence of someone else will lose future or present opportunities to succeed if your hearer could have helped. Stop it please, if you do that! [of course, unless if that person in question is an actual threat to life or good things. Then your words would be caution, and not products of malice].

(2) HE SHOWED NO MERCY: Mercy is often needed only, in the face of weaknesses and shortcomings. How do you behave when you feel you are stronger, “better”, or “more perfect” than your brother? Check your attitudes towards your own brothers.

(3) HIS ANGER DESTROYED CONTINUOSLY: Because God doesn’t operate like that, He had to rebuke Edom for being so destructive. There are people who will continue to deal with you, and punish you, for the sins you committed against them many years ago. That is evil by itself! Please, put your sword in its sheet!

(4) HE MANTAINED AND NURTURED HIS WRATH FOREVER: You certainly know how to maintain something. That means you feed, invest in, constantly make shine, water, and nourish the thing-In order to make sure it doesn’t die or get destroyed. Imagine you doing such to an offense committed against you! Telling everyone who comes around. Constantly reminding yourself and everyone of it. Refusing to let it go! That is evil, you should stop before God turns around to engage you in a battle as He promised to deal with Edom.

God loves forgiveness and mercy. He is love in person, and He wants us to operate like Him towards one another. Enjoy your week, and please make sure you reconcile with your brothers if you can.
