UNDERSTANDING BEING POOR IN SPIRIT

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:3 NKJV

When the Bible speaks of being poor in spirit, it is not referring to being poor in the pocket. Being poor in spirit means to have a contrite or meek spirit, or humble heart. Humility is the emphasis here, not lack of material or physical possessions. Poverty and humility have two different meanings; do not ever mix them up!

If someone is poor financially, that does not mean he is a humble person… and that someone is wealthy doesn’t automatically mean he or she is arrogant! Humility is always from the heart, not from the pocket! *”… thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.”* Isaiah 57:15 NKJV. Jesus said the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to these humble ones, because God is naturally attracted to meek and humble people. Who truly, according to the scriptures, are the humble people?? It is not those who bow the head or shoulders when greeting people; it is those who tremble at the word of God! Those who respect and practice God’s Word are classified as the humble! *”… But on this one will I look: on him who is poor and of a contrite spirit, and who trembles at My word.”* Isaiah 66:2 NKJV.

Do not plan to become broke in your pocket because you want to please God. Humble your heart instead before Him. Have respect for His word by applying it in your daily activities! Walk in the light of His word every day. Serve Him with your life and with your substances. Then, you’ll be spiritually classified as the meek, one who is poor in spirit! One to whom the Kingdom of Heaven belongs.

*SAY:*

Thank you gracious God for this knowledge! From today, I humble my heart before you oh God. I put you and your word always ahead of my personal goals and desires, in Jesus’ mighty name I declare. Amen!
