HELP THE NEEDY, BUT DROP THE TRUMPET

“But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:” Matthew 6:3 KJV

Alms are offerings you give to someone in desperate need. The person doesn’t necessarily have to be a regular beggar. The needy might even be a rich man in a desperate situation. Whoever is lacking something good at a given time is in need! So, whatever you give to someone out of pity for his or her present condition is called alms. And such offerings shouldn’t be boasted about.

Jesus said when you give alms to the needy, don’t go around bragging about it. Doing so will make you lose the blessing that should have followed your good action. Giving to the needy is a noble act, and such actions attract divine blessings: “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Proverbs 19:17 KJV. GOD will pay you back, whatever you give to the needy. But, going around bragging, announcing to the public what you did to the needy is termed hypocricy by Jesus. “Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.” Matthew 6:2 KJV. In effect, those who do such won’t get any spiritual rewards.

If you do your alms secretly, without embarracing the receiver, or attracting praises from men, GOD will reward you. And such rewards will be so big that people will see. That is why He said, The Father will reward you openly. “But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.” Matthew 6:3‭-‬4 KJV. If you make your alms giving public because you need more people to support you in helping the poor, that’s fine! That is good, and required. But, to go public because you want people to honor you, or see how good you have been, you would be very wrong. Do your alms with the motive of solving problems, rather than wining political votes. GOD has something to give you in return, if you help the needy with the right attitude.
